The use of Pradaxa has been linked to life-threatening complications, including massive internal bleeding and intracranial hemorrhage.  Over 4,000 victims will receive money from drugmaker Boehringer Ingelheim as part of a settlement related to Pradaxa. Most of these victims suffered serious injuries, and hundreds lost their lives, as a result of the adverse effects of Pradaxa.

What is Pradaxa?

Pradaxa (generic name dabigatran) is an anticoagulant used to prevent blood clots. Specifically, it is used to prevent strokes in patients who suffer non-valvular atrial fibrillation. The manufacturer of Pradaxa failed to adequately ensure the safety of the drug and failed to warn the medical community and consumers of the bleeding risks involved. They are now being held responsible for their actions. In October 2013, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices named Pradaxa as one of the most dangerous drugs on the U.S. pharmaceutical market. The Institute reported that within a few months after Pradaxa received FDA approval, 3,781 adverse event reports, including 542 deaths, were submitted to the agency.

Symptoms of Pradaxa internal bleeding may include:

  • Vomiting or coughing up blood
  • Vomit that resembles coffee grounds
  • Unusual lethargy
  • Abnormal bruising or bleeding
  • Urine that is pink or brown
  • Stools that are red or black and tarry
  • Headaches
  • Bleeding gums
  • Frequent nosebleeds
  • Weakness and/or swelling of the arms or hands
  • Weakness and/or swelling of the feet, ankles or lower legs
  • Pain or swelling in the joints
  • Dizziness
