I had bladder sling surgery and recently learned that a type of surgical mesh was used. I have heard that there have been some safety issues with certain types of mesh. How can I know whether to be concerned?

A: Bladder "slings" using surgical mesh are sometimes used for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Some women who have had mesh used in bladder "sling" surgery have reported serious complications. Some of these complications include:

  • pain
  • infection
  • bleeding
  • organ perforation
  • vaginal scarring or shrinkage
  • mesh erosion, exposure , and/or protrusion

If you are experiencing any of these problems after your bladder "sling" surgery, you would be well advised to consult with your doctor to see if the mesh he or she used is responsible for any of your medical problems and to determine the proper treatment options.

If you have been harmed by defective surgical mesh, please share your story with us. We would be happy to listen and let you know whether we can help you.
