A: The FDA uses categories to help pregnant consumers determine the safety of taking a certain medicine while pregnant. Drugs placed in Categories A and B are generally safe to use while pregnant. Drugs in Category C should be taken only when the potential benefit of taking the drug outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Drugs in Category D pose a risk to the fetus and should be taken only when there is a risk to the mother if she does not take the drug.
Paxil has been downgraded by the FDA from a Category C to a Category D drug based on a study showing a link between mothers taking the drug and their children suffering from birth defects.
Other anti-depressants like Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Prozac are still listed as Category C drugs.
While the FDA's Categories do serve as useful guidance, you should always consult your doctor to determine whether continuing to take an anti-depressant while pregnant will outweigh the risks posed to your unborn baby.
