A: Victoza, also known as liraglutide injection, is a medication that is used to control high blood sugar levels in adults with type-2 diabetes. The medication, which is taken as an injection, was approved by the FDA in 2010, but with limitations because of the safety risks the medicine poses. The FDA issued a safety announcement for Victoza because clinical trials suggested the drug may cause pancreatitis and even acute pancreatitis. Additionally, when the drug was tested on animals, researchers found that the animals contracted thyroid cancer. The FDA has required Victoza’s maker Noro Nordisk to conduct additional studies to better understand the risks associated with the medicine.
