A: The FDA is advising patients taking bisphosphonates like Fosamax to see their doctor, especially if they develop a pain in their thigh. Most of the women who were taking these drugs and suffered from a spontaneous fractured femur had been on the drugs for five years or more and had experienced thigh pain in the months leading up to the fracture.
Patients who are worried about developing a femur fracture, but have not experienced thigh pain, should not take themselves off the medication. Rather, the FDA is advising these patients to talk with their doctor about how the drug will affect them and about alternative treatment options.
Finally, patients who have been taking a bisphosphonate for four years or longer should talk with their doctor about whether they should continue to take the drug. Again, most of the women who developed fractures had been taking bisphosphonates for five years or more.
