What is a traumatic brain injury?

A: Traumatic Brain Injury is often referred to as "TBI". The consequences of a "TBI" can affect your personality and mental abilities. Sometimes even after an initial injury has healed, the consequences of a brain injury persist. One of the consequences of a brain injury is that oftentimes the changes are so subtle that the person doesn't even realize he or she has suffered a "TBI". Symptoms may not even appear for weeks after the initial injury. However, the injury can be devastating. It is important to seek prompt medical attention if you have received a closed head injury and experience any of the following symptoms:

Even with a MILD TBI, common symptoms include: fatigue, headaches, visual disturbances, memory loss, poor attention/concentration, sleep disturbances, dizziness/loss of balance, irritability-emotional disturbances, feelings of depression, seizures. Other symptoms can include nausea, loss of smell, sensitivity to light and sounds, mood changes, getting lost or confused, and slowness in thinking. If you have had any head trauma and experience any of these symptoms you would be well advised to seek the advise of a qualified health care professional.
