What is pancreatitis and what is acute pancreatitis?

A: According to the National Institutes of Health, pancreatitis is a condition in which the pancreas, an organ that is involved in digestive processes, becomes inflamed. Normally, the pancreas secretes digestive enzymes that travel to the small intestine. But the pancreas can become inflamed when its own enzymes attack it and damage the tissue. Acute pancreatitis occurs suddenly and can lead to life-threatening complications. People who experience this feel acute pain and require immediate medical attention. Symptoms of acute pancreatitis include pain running from the upper abdomen to the back, nausea, vomiting, fever, a rapid heartbeat, and a swollen, tender abdomen.
Diabetes medications like Actos and Victoza have been linked to causing pancreatitis. If you experience any of the symptoms described above, the National Institutes of Health recommend that you see a doctor as soon as possible. This FAQ is not intended to give medical or legal advice.
