Type 2 diabetes can cause dangerous complications including heart disease, high blood pressure, nerve damage, kidney damage, eye damage, foot damage, osteoporosis, and even Alzheimer's disease. When a patient has type 2 diabetes, a doctor may prescribe Actos to reduce blood sugar and lower the risk of serious complications from diabetes.
However, Actos may have its own risks. The FDA is conducting an epidemiological study of the drug, and the preliminary five-year results show that patients taking pioglitazone for a period of one year or longer are at an increased risk for contracting bladder cancer.
Pioglitazone, the active ingredient in Actos, is also found in Actoplus Met and Duetact.
Pioglitazone is a thiazolidinedione (TZD) class medication. The use of another TZD drug for diabetes, Avandia, was restricted in the United States because of concerns that the drug increased the risk of heart attack. Currently Avandia is only used when pioglitazone therapy does not work.
Pioglitazone has also been linked to an increased risk of kidney disease, liver damage, bone fracture, congestive heart disease, heart failure, heart attack, and death.
If you have experienced any of the dangerous medical conditions associated with pioglitazone while taking Actos, Actoplus or Duetact, you may have a legal claim for compensation.
