The temperatures are rising in Dallas and many families are heading on their summer vacations. Whether you are making the long trip to the beach or heading to another state to enjoy cooler weather, there are some things that you can do to help reduce your chances of being involved in a Texas car accident. These tips have to do with your vehicle and can make all the difference as you head out of town.
Summer Travel Tips for Texas Families
Before you embark on a road trip, you need to make sure that your vehicle is well maintained and in the best possible condition. Let’s take a look at some tips that will help keep you out of trouble this summer.
Check the fluids. You need to look at the levels of oil, brake, power steering, windshield and transmission fluid. It is also important that you check the coolant level and get your vehicle serviced, if necessary.
Review the tire pressure. The manual that came with your vehicle will specify the recommended pounds per square inch (PSI) of air. Be sure to check the pressure at a time in which the tires haven’t been used for at least three hours.
Measure your tire tread. The last thing you want is a blowout on the freeway. Check the tread of each tire, even the spare. A quick test to see if the tread is okay is to insert a penny into the tread. If Lincoln’s entire head is visible, you will need to get the tire replaced.
Make sure your seatbelts are working properly. Seatbelts have been known to save lives in Dallas car accidents. Be sure that each seatbelt is functioning, as it should. Look for signs of fraying or weakening of the fabric. Also, test each belt to see if it is retracting correctly.
Pack an emergency kit. You never know what to expect when you’re on the road, which is why it is crucial to carry an emergency roadside kit. It should include first aid items, flashlight, jumper cables, car jack and drinking water, at the very least. You might also want to include flares, tools and food.
