Health Concerns Over the use of Yaz & Yasmin

There are many birth control options to choose from. Most women are under the impression that since their birth control medicines are available on the open market that they are free from risk or injury. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Research suggests that the use of Yaz and Yasmin could lead to a Yaz injury.

About Yaz and Yasmin

Bayer introduced Yasmin in 2001 and its sister drug Yaz in 2006 to prevent unwanted pregnancies. They were introduced as a safer form of birth control offering added benefits, such as treatment for acne and severe premenstrual depression. The two drugs bring in over $1 billion in sales each year.

Concerns over the use of Yaz and Yasmin

Health concerns over the use of the two drugs have surfaced over the past few years. Yaz and Yasmin contain estrogen and drospirenone and have been linked to:

  • Blood clots
  • Heart attacks
  • Strokes
  • Pulmonary Embolisms
  • Venous thromboembolism
  • Deep vein thrombosis or DVT
  • In some cases, sudden death

A recent study

The Yaz line has taken a hit to its image over concerns raised by health advocates, researchers, and lawyers. However, a European study suggests a different conclusion about the health risks associated with taking Yaz and Yasmin. The study claims that the cardiovascular risks associated with the two birth control drugs were comparable to older types of oral contraceptives. It's important to note that the European study was sponsored by the drug's manufacturer, Bayer.

Common symptoms to look for

If you are taking Yaz or Yasmin and believe that you might be suffering health problems, you should look for symptoms that include:

  • Severe chest pain
  • Continuous leg pain
  • Frequent and sudden shortness of breath
  • Pain felt in your upper right abdomen lasting anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours

Lawsuits filed against Bayer

According to Bayer, they have been served 74 lawsuits from women who claim that the use of Yaz or Yasmin has resulted in health problems. Bayer intends to defend itself vigorously.
