More than 2.2 million Americans suffer from A-fib, the most common type of irregular heartbeat rhythm disorder. Individuals suffering from A-fib have a risk of stroke that is up to seven times greater than the risk of stroke for the general population. Blood thinner Pradaxa is used in patients with A-fib to prevent stroke, but recently fatal Pradaxa bleeding events have been reported.
Pradaxa was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2010. Pradaxa is often used as an alternative to another dangerous drug, Warfarin. Like Warfarin, Pradaxa doesn’t actually thin the blood, but interferes with the blood's ability to clot. For this reason, both drugs are associated with potentially fatal internal bleeding.
Adverse events associated with Pradaxa include:
Researchers originally thought that Pradaxa was safer than Warfarin. But recent research suggests that Pradaxa may be even more dangerous than Warfarin, a drug that tops several lists of dangerous drugs. Warfarin bleeding can be treated with high doses of vitamin K. There is no antidote for internal bleeding caused by Pradaxa.
More than 260 Pradaxa bleeding deaths have been reported worldwide. Several countries are reconsidering their approval of the drug, and the FDA is looking at studies to determine the bleeding risk with Pradaxa. The FDA continues to say that it believes Pradaxa provides important health benefits when used as directed and under a doctor’s supervision.
