5 Ways to Avoid a Dallas Motorcycle Accident

The weather has warmed up and therefore more motorcyclists are hitting the road. As the number of motorcycle riders increases this time of year, it is more important than ever to take extra precaution to avoid a Texas motorcycle accident.

May is the official Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in the Lone Star state. Motorists and motorcyclists alike should be reminded to safely “share the road,” and take other safety measures.

We Have a Problem

The number of motorcycle accident fatalities is so high that safety experts are referring to it as a “grave public health problem.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), created a motorcycle safety awareness fact sheet that opens your eyes to what you can do to prevent a serious motorcycle crash. Whether you are a motorist or a motorcyclist, there are certain safety tips that you should not ignore. The following is a summary of the NHTSA’s important advice:

  1. Pay attention to the road. It doesn’t matter if you are in a car or on a bike - you need to stay focused. Driver distractions have been a hot topic in the news and for good reason. Distracted driving can have fatal consequences, as seen by many recent motorcycle wrecks and car crashes.
  2. A motorcycle should be given a full lane width. Sharing the lane is a dangerous practice. It is imperative that a motorcycle has enough room to safely maneuver.
  3. Always look for motorcycles. A rider can easily disappear in a vehicle’s blind spot or may be missed when quickly glancing behind or to the side.
  4. Make sure that there is a 3- to 4-second following distance. A motorcyclist must be given enough room to stop in an emergency or avoid a hazard.
  5. Keep in mind that minor road conditions can cause major problems for motorcyclists. A bump in the road or uneven surface might not be an issue in a car or truck, but when you are on a bike, it can be dangerous. Motorcyclists often need to change speeds or positions when approaching potential hazards.

While we can take steps to reduce our risks of an accident, it is difficult to predict the actions of the other driver. If you have been injured in a Dallas motorcycle accident, you may be able to recover compensation.
