Last month, a federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) panel recommended that the labels on Yaz and other birth control pills containing the synthetic hormone drospirenone be updated to warn users that these contraceptives may carry a higher risk of blood clots than other birth control pills.
Drospirenone, the active ingredient in Yaz, Yasmin, Gianvi, Ocella, and Loryna, is a manmade hormone that mimics progesterone. Pills containing drospirenone have been advertised as having fewer side-effects than traditional birth control pills. Some advertisements have even claimed that the pills can clear up acne and prevent premenstrual mood disorders. Since Yaz was released in 2006, it has become the most-widely prescribed birth control pill in the United States.
But, Yaz and its generics may have a dark side. Five separate large studies conducted since 2009 have found that birth control pills containing drospirenone present a slightly higher risk of blood clots than older birth control pills. In fact, an FDA study found that the risk of a blood clot is 75 percent higher in women taking drugs containing drospirenone than it is for women using other forms of oral contraceptives. Yaz blood clots are dangerous because they can trigger heart attacks, strokes, and pulmonary embolism, conditions that can be fatal.
Thousands of women have experienced blood clots, heart attacks, and strokes after taking Yaz. More than 10,000 women are suing Bayer for injuries caused by Yaz. The first Yaz injury lawsuits will be going to trial this month.
The FDA is reviewing the safety of Yaz because drug injury lawyers across the United States are working to hold Bayer accountable for blood clots caused by drospirenone. These dangerous drug attorneys are leading the campaign for better labeling. On December 9, the FDA panel voted 21-5 in favor of adding information about the potential risk of blood clots in the legs and lungs to Yaz labels.
