Last fall, major news broke as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requested that Darvon and Darvocet be taken off the market. This major move by the FDA followed an eye-opening study about the potential heart problems associated with these medications.
According to a November 2010 news release by the FDA:
“The FDA sought market withdrawal of propoxyphene after receiving new clinical data showing that the drug puts patients at risk of potentially serious or even fatal heart rhythm abnormalities. As a result of these data, combined with other information, including new epidemiological data, the agency concluded that the risks of the medication outweigh the benefits.”
Xanodyne Pharmaceutical Inc., which manufactures Darvon and Darvocet, agreed to remove the medication from the market. Generic manufacturers were also asked to withdraw their versions of propoxyphene.
Research Links Propoxyphene to Heart Problems
A study was conducted by Xanodyne that looked into the effect propoxyphene has on the heart. The research showed that even when the pain medication is taken at the correct doses, it still changes the electrical activity of the heart. The FDA reported that these changes could create a bigger risk for serious abnormal heart rhythms. Not only could these abnormal heart rhythms lead to major complications, they could result in death.
Unlike some of the other dangerous drugs pulled off of the market, this particular medication has affected a massive amount of patients. It is estimated that millions of people across the country have taken Darvon, Darvocet or the generic versions. If you or a loved one falls into this group and have experienced heart problems, you need to talk with a lawyer.
