Diabetes drug Actos May Lead to a Dallas Dangerous Drug Injury

Millions of Americans are treated for diabetes on a daily basis. Many are treating their condition by the use of drugs. What happens when your prescription drug may lead to a serious Dallas dangerous drug injury, such as bladder cancer?

Diabetes drug Actos may be linked to bladder cancer

That is what a new warning issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suggests about the diabetes drug, Actos. In September, the FDA launched a safety review to study the possible link between Actos and bladder cancer.

What is Actos?

Actos, manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals, is a drug used to treat type 2 diabetes. Actos is a thiazolidinedione that increases the body's sensitivity to insulin to help control blood sugar levels.

FDA study

The FDA is warning that patients who take Actos for more than one year may have a 40 percent increased risk of bladder cancer. The FDA issued its warning after analyzing five years of data from a ten-year Actos safety study.

Common bladder cancer symptoms

If you are currently using Actos to treat your diabetes, you might be at risk of bladder cancer. You should look for and get immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms that include:

  • Increased weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Pain or tenderness in your bones
  • Pain in your abdomen region
  • Urine leakage

Warning to health professionals

The FDA has issued a warning that Actos should not be prescribed to people who already have bladder cancer or people with a history of bladder cancer. However, the FDA has stated that if you are currently taking Actos, you should continue to do so until advised otherwise.

Changes to warning labels

In light of the new warnings, officials report that information about the risk will be included on the labels of Actos. The warnings will also be included in the patient medication guide.

If you believe Actos is putting you at risk

If you are taking Actos and concerned with the adverse effects from taking the drug, you should speak with your doctor immediately. You should also speak with an experienced Dallas dangerous drug attorney who can advise you about your rights and whether or not you might have a case.
