Surgical mesh is generally used to repair weakened or damaged tissue. In women, it is often used for the transvaginal repair of pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Surgical mesh is typically made from a porous absorbable or non-absorbable, synthetic, or biological material.
POP is a weakening of the pelvic organs or stress urinary incontinence (SUI). POP occurs when the internal structures that support a woman's pelvic organs weaken or stretch causing the organs to drop from their normal positions. Those that suffer from POP may experience a urine leakage during physical activities, pelvic discomfort and a disruption in their sexual functions.
According to statistics, POP may develop in 30% to 50% of women. There were 100,000 reported POP repairs conducted in 2010. Nearly 75,000 of them involved transvaginal procedures.
In many cases, surgical mesh will be used to repair POP and the procedure will be performed transvaginally. Surgical mesh is used to repair or correct the weakened or stressed anatomy.
The FDA has reported concerns over the use of surgical mesh to treat POP and SUI repairs. Common side effects include:
According to the FDA, there were 1503 reported cases of adverse affects resulting from surgical mesh products in POP repairs from January 2005 to December 2010. There were three deaths reported relating to the mesh placement procedure.
As a woman, you may suffer from a pelvic organ collapse, requiring the use of a transvaginal mesh product. You shouldn't ignore the FDA's warnings, especially if you have already undergone a POP repair procedure. Look for symptoms, and get immediate medical attention if you experience any complications.
