Pradaxa Injury Claims: Are You At Risk Of Excessive Pradaxa Hemorrhaging?

Patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib) not caused by a heart valve problem were prescribed blood thinner Pradaxa to reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots. But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently received reports of Pradaxa bleeding events, some fatal.

Pradaxa Bleeding Events: Timeline

October 2010: Pradaxa approved for use in the United States

August 2011: Japanese regulators require a warning on Pradaxa after 14 Pradaxa-related deaths and after more than 64,000 patients experience excessive Pradaxa hemorrhaging.

October 2011: The European Medicines Agency (EMA) advises that Pradaxa patients over age 75 or with renal impairment receive annual kidney checks because of Pradaxa internal bleeding risks.

December 2011: The FDA begins investigating reports of internal bleeding caused by Pradaxa. The FDA advises patients to continue taking their medication as directed by their doctor.

Pradaxa has been linked to thousands of cases of internal bleeding including gastrointestinal bleeds, kidney bleeds, and brain hemorrhages.

Pradaxa Bleeding Events: How do you know if you are at risk?

You may have an increased risk of Pradaxa internal bleeding if you:

  • Are over age 75
  • Have kidney disease or a history of kidney problems
  • Are taking dronedarone (Multaq) or ketoconazole (Nizoral) for kidney problems
  • Have had a stomach ulcer
  • Have recently had stomach or intestinal bleeding
  • Are taking other medications that increase the risk of bleeding, such as aspirin, aspirin products, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or blood thinners

Make sure you know the signs and symptoms of excessive Pradaxa hemorrhaging, and call your doctor if you notice any of the following:

  • Bleeding that is unexpected, severe, or uncontrollable
  • Bleeding that lasts a long time
  • Excessive, unusual, or unexpected bruising
  • Coughing or vomiting of blood
  • Vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Urine that is colored pink or brown
  • Red or black, tarry stools
  • Unexpected pain
  • Pain or swelling in the joints
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
