Xarelto has become the most popular anticoagulant (blood thinner) in its class in America. The British Medical Journal conducted a study, however, that suggests those who use Xarelto may have double their risk for gastrointestinal bleeding when compared with warfarin (Coumadin) users.

The study included over 45,000 United States patients and its purpose was…

To determine the real world safety of dabigatran or rivaroxaban compared with warfarin in terms of gastrointestinal bleeding.

Blood thinners are widely prescribed in the United States, and worldwide, to prevent blood clots from forming as a result of atrial fibrillation, or after hip or knee replacement surgery. They also treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and help to prevent blood clots from reforming.

Xarelto Bleeding Events Cannot be Reversed

Xarelto manufacturers claim there are many benefits and advantages over warfarin, the only blood thinner that has been available for half a century. These benefits include simpler dosing (once a day), no monitoring required (fewer trips to the doctor), and fewer drug interactions.

However, the elephant in the room is that there is no known antidote for Xarelto that would stop an internal bleeding event. Warfarin, on the other hand, could have its effects reversed with a dose of vitamin K.

If you are taking Xarelto, do not stop taking it until you speak with your doctor. Because there is a two-fold chance of gastrointestinal bleeding associated with Xarelto use, a bleeding event that cannot be stopped is twice as likely to happen. Gastrointestinal bleeding can cause very serious injury and even death.

Current Xarelto Litigation

Hence, Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Bayer Corporation (makers of Xarelto) are now facing numerous lawsuits from plaintiffs alleging that they put patients’ lives at risk by failing to provide product labeling that sufficiently warned consumers about the possibility of uncontrollable hemorrhaging caused by Xarelto.

There are now more than 300 Xarelto lawsuits in litigation in Louisiana and another 160 pending in a mass tort proceeding in Pennsylvania. Victims state they would have never used Xarelto had they been aware of the dangers. In addition, plaintiffs allege that Xarelto manufacturers mislead health care providers by claiming that no follow-up testing was necessary.
