Too often drowning accidents happen in private pools, hotel and motel pools, water parks and other bodies of water when somebody has been negligent or failed at their job.

When pool water is cloudy, gates don’t work properly, and other hazards are present that shouldn’t be, children and other swimmers lose their lives.

All drowning incidents are preventable.

Ninety-six children have drowned in Texas so far this year according to the Texas Department of Family & Protective Services and we are only in mid-summer. Most of these drownings, 14 to be exact, have occurred in Dallas than in any other city in Texas.

More than 400 children have drowned in Texas in the past five years. Four of these recent drownings took place the past two weeks. Three of the children who drowned were siblings swimming in an apartment complex pool in which the water was so murky that first responders didn’t realize the young girl’s body was at the bottom of the deep end for some time.

These senseless deaths may have been prevented had the pool water been taken care of properly. Another young 6-year-old girl drowned and was pulled from the bottom of a Ft. Worth apartment complex pool.

According to the Ft. Worth Fire Department, the drowning may have been prevented if the water wasn’t as cloudy as it was. The other swimmers who pulled her from the bottom of the pool may have seen her much sooner. Again, a drowning that may have been prevented.

Those who survive drowning incidents usually end up with serious brain damage due to the lack of oxygen to the brain during the accident. Lives are changed forever from drowning injuries.
