Kay Van Wey - Patient Advocate
I spend a significant amount of time advocating for patient safety—because I’m a patient, and everyone I care about is a patient too. I’m Kay Van Wey, and I’ve taken my mission to protect patients beyond the courtroom to the Texas State Legislature.
Today, I’m standing alongside Representative Cassandra Hernandez to support a critical new Texas healthcare bill that empowers patients. Our goal is simple: ensure that patients undergoing any medical procedure or surgery fully understand what they are consenting to.
Currently in Texas, the legal documents patients are required to sign before surgery—often long and complex—are created by a panel made up entirely of physicians and attorneys representing healthcare providers. This process lacks transparency and fails to represent the interests of everyday Texans.
That’s why we’re advocating to add public voices to the Texas Medical Disclosure Panel. Patients deserve to have representation when decisions are being made about the medical information they receive.
One point I continually emphasize to lawmakers is this: no matter your political affiliation—Republican, Democrat, conservative, or liberal—we are all patients, and the people we love are patients. We all deserve clarity, honesty, and fairness when it comes to healthcare.
Across Texas and the country, healthcare providers enjoy legal protections that have made it increasingly difficult for victims of medical malpractice to seek justice. Over the years, patient rights have eroded, leaving many harmed individuals without a voice or a path forward. I’m here to help change that.
Kay Van Wey has long been a leader in the movement for healthcare accountability. I’ve admired her for years because of her fearless commitment to improving patient safety. Her legal expertise and relentless drive have helped bring meaningful reforms—not just in Texas, but nationwide.
In our coalition, we include physicians, nurses, and families who have been directly impacted by medical errors. We believe in creating a diverse and balanced panel that brings together all perspectives. Kay’s work on medical boards has already made a measurable difference, and we are proud to have her on our team.
Patients need a voice, and it’s time we do something about it.
Thank you, Kay, for being a champion for this bill and for your unwavering dedication to the cause. I’m honored to stand beside you in this fight.
